Your First Gynecology Visit: What to Expect and Why It Matters
Are you nervous about your first gynecology visit? In this blog, we break it down, including what to expect, why it matters, and how to feel prepared for your appointment.

Are you feeling nervous about your first gynecology appointment? You’re not alone. Whether you’re a teenager scheduling your first well-woman exam or an adult visiting a gynecologist for the first time, it’s normal to have questions about what will happen during your visit.

Your first appointment is often more about starting a conversation than undergoing an exam. Your visit with our team at Westover Hills Women’s Health is an opportunity to build a relationship with a provider, ask questions, and take an important step toward protecting your reproductive and overall health.

Below, we explain what to expect during your first gynecological visit.

Why your first gynecology visit is important

Many women assume they only need to see a gynecologist if they’re sexually active or experiencing symptoms. But routine gynecologic care also helps prevent health problems before they start.

For teens

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that girls have their first visit with a gynecologist between ages 13 and 15, even if they don’t need a pelvic exam.

During your teen’s first appointment, she can expect to:

  • Learn about her changing body
  • Discuss menstrual concerns
  • Ask questions about puberty, sexual health, or birth control
  • Receive recommended vaccines and screenings
  • Establish care with a provider at Westover Hills Women’s Health before a health concern arises

We can also discuss the HPV vaccine, which we recommend young women receive between the ages of 9 and 26.

For adults

If you’re an adult who has never seen a gynecologist, it’s never too late to begin routine care. You can ask questions about your menstrual cycle, reproductive health, health screenings, and family planning.

What happens during your first visit?

Your first appointment usually begins with a conversation. We ask about your and your family’s medical history. We also discuss your menstrual cycle, current medications, symptoms or concerns, and sexual history, if applicable.

This is also your opportunity to ask questions, and most importantly, no topic is off-limits. Whether you’re wondering if your periods are normal, have concerns about birth control, or simply want to understand your reproductive health better, we’re here to help.

Depending on your age, symptoms, and medical history, your visit may also include:

  • A height, weight, and blood pressure check
  • A breast exam, when appropriate
  • A pelvic exam, if medically indicated
  • A Pap smear, based on your age and current screening guidelines

Many first-time patients don’t need a pelvic exam. If you do, we explain why you need it and answer your questions before beginning.

You can help make your visit go smoothly

Preparing ahead of time can help you (or your teen daughter) feel more relaxed and make the most of your appointment.

Before your visit:

  • Write down any questions you’d like to ask
  • Bring a list of your medications
  • Know the date of your last menstrual period
  • Bring your insurance card and photo ID
  • Arrive a few minutes early to complete paperwork

There’s no such thing as an embarrassing question. We provide a comfortable, judgment-free environment where you or your daughter can openly discuss your health concerns.

Routine gynecology visits beyond your first visit

You don’t have to wait until something feels wrong to see a gynecologist. Regular visits (and even telehealth visits) give you a chance to check in on your health, ask questions, and catch potential problems early.

Depending on your age and needs, your visits may include:

  • Cervical cancer screenings
  • Evaluation for heavy or irregular periods and pelvic pain
  • Birth control and family planning discussions
  • Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing
  • Help managing perimenopause and menopause symptoms

Your health needs change throughout your life. Having a gynecologist who knows your history makes it easier to get the right screenings, answers, and care as your needs change.
